CHRR urges calm, transparency

Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has asked the citizenry, political actors and institutions to uphold peace, transparency, respect of the rule of law and democratic processes as Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announces results.

In a statement yesterday, CHRR executive director Michael Kaiyatsa said they have noted growing anxiety and tension in the country, particularly in light of heightened political rhetoric and confrontational exchanges between major parties after the September 16 General Election.

He said: “In this crucial period, CHRR stresses the importance of national unity, lawful conduct, and constructive dialogue.

“The organisation encourages Malawians to remain calm and patient as the Malawi Electoral Commission completes the vote counting process. Citizens are urged to avoid spreading misinformation or engaging in activities that could disrupt public order.”

Kaiyatsa also said respect for constitutional and legal procedures is essential in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

“Political leaders and parties are reminded of their responsibility to act in the best interest of the nation. CHRR urges them to refrain from making inflammatory statements or inciting violence,” he said.

Kaiyatsa then called on MEC to continue conducting its work with the highest standards of transparency, professionalism and accountability.

On Sunday, MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja expressed concern about political leaders and stakeholders who are claiming victory or issuing public statements that directly contradict results officially released by the commission.
